2023/24 Event Review
The first HYROX Washington, DC event was held on 2nd March 2024 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.
The event was the HYROX North American Open Championships and hosted the latest North American Major race for the Elite 15. The Men’s and Women’s Elite races were livestreamed on HYROX.com and YouTube (see below) on the Friday night and were again co-commentated by our very own Greg.
The lineups for the races are shown below… (Vivian Tafuto and Jake Williamson were also late additions).
Read on for the main results of the event…
Women’s Elite
An exciting Women’s Elite 15 race was won by Lauren Weeks in a time of 01:01:20. This was the second major win for Lauren this season, after her record breaking run in Vienna just 3 weeks prior.
Second was Linda Meier in 01:02:37. Linda briefly led the race after being first out of the sled pull, but 2 penalties on the burpees meant that Lauren Weeks regained the lead. This was another impressive performance from Linda having finished 3rd in the previous 3 majors this season, and she was delighted to go one better in this race.
Megan Jacoby, who won the first 2 majors of the season, was third in 01:02:37.
Vivian Tafuto was 4th and Lauren Griffith was 5th. The top 4 had already qualified for the World Championships in Nice in June, so Lauren Griffith is the only qualifier from this race. Through much of the race Lauren was in a battle for a qualifying spot with 50 year old mum of 5 children, Amy Bevilacqua, but ultimately came out on top after performing really strong on the wall balls. In the process though, Amy Bevilacqua did improve upon her own world record in the 50-54 age group for the Women’s Pro division (with 01:05:49).
Men’s Elite
Dylan Scott won the Men’s Elite race in a time of 00:56:37 – just a week after setting a PB in Fort Lauderdale! It was a dominant performance from Dylan, and his last 2 races have surely made him one of the favourites for a podium spot in the 2024 World Championships in Nice.
Graham Halliday was second in 00:58:08. Having entered the wall balls in 6th place, Graham performed incredibly with 100 unbroken wall balls to ultimately finish in second place!
Third was Rich Ryan in 00:58:16, following a good battle with Lukas Storath and Colin Stiefer throughout the race.
All 3 men qualify for the World Championships in Nice in June.
Women’s Open
The Women’s Open was won by Sarah Keshishian in a time of 01:03:47
Second was Alex Shabo in 01:03:51.
Third place was taken by Kim Stocklmeir in a time of 01:04:31.
Men’s Open
The Men’s Open was won by Justin Rubin in a time of 00:57:54.
Second was Ryan Callahan in 00:57:56.
Third place was taken by Bret Gornik in a time of 00:59:26.
A special mention goes to Rox Lyfe coach Paul Gillingham, who finished with a new PB, 2nd in the 40-44 Age Group and an impressive 21st overall.
Open Doubles
The Men’s Open Doubles was won by Marcus Funken and James Muscart in a time of 00:53:43.
The Women’s Open Doubles was won by Meghan McNab and Ali Summers in a time of 00:57:30.
The Mixed Open Doubles was won by Marc Doerfer and Karyn Guidry in a time of 00:56:47.
