The PUMA Deviate Nitro Elite 4 HYROX is the first shoe designed specifically for the demands of HYROX racing. That matters, because HYROX is not a running race. You need speed on the runs, but you also need control, grip, and stability when fatigue hits across eight stations.

This shoe is PUMA’s attempt to bridge that gap. A true race shoe that still works when you pick up kettlebells, hit lunges, or drive through sleds.

I’ve been using it myself, and it’s now my go-to for racing. Here’s why…

What Makes This a HYROX-Specific Shoe?

Most carbon race shoes are built for straight-line efficiency. Light, aggressive, and designed for pure running economy.

That works for road races but can cause problems in HYROX.

You’re under load. You’re transitioning constantly between running and strength.  A traditional super shoe can feel unstable or even risky in that environment.

PUMA has clearly designed this version with those demands in mind:

  • Wider platform for better balance under load
  • Full-coverage grip designed for indoor flooring
  • More controlled ride compared to typical carbon racers
  • Built to handle multi-directional movement

Key Specs and Technology

Here’s what you’re actually getting under the hood:

Midsole: NITROFOAM™ Elite
This is PUMA’s top-tier foam. Lightweight, responsive, and designed for energy return. You get a noticeable bounce without it feeling overly soft or unstable.

Plate: Full-length carbon PWRPLATE
The plate adds stiffness and propulsion, helping you maintain pace across the 8km of running. It feels efficient rather than aggressive, which suits HYROX better than an overly harsh setup.

Stack height: ~40mm heel
This puts it in line with modern race shoes. You get protection and energy return, but you are higher off the ground than in flatter options.

Outsole: PUMAGRIP (full coverage)
This is one of the standout features. Grip is excellent on indoor surfaces, especially on sled push/pull and lunges where footing matters.

Upper: Lightweight engineered mesh
Breathable and race-focused, but with enough structure to keep your foot secure during stations.

How It Feels in a HYROX Race

This is where the shoe actually separates itself from many others on the market…

Running:
You get that carbon-plated efficiency you’d expect. It feels quick, smooth, and helps you hold pace when fatigue builds. Over 8 x 1km efforts, that matters.

Sled push and pull:
Grip is solid. More importantly, the platform feels stable enough that you’re not fighting the shoe while trying to generate force.

Farmers carry:
Stable enough, but you still feel the stack height. If you’re someone who likes to feel very grounded, this is where you’ll notice it most.

Lunges:
This is often where race shoes fall apart. The Elite 4 holds up well. The wider base helps stability, and the grip gives you confidence through each step.

Strengths

  • Strong balance between speed and stability
  • Excellent grip for indoor HYROX surfaces
  • Carbon plate helps maintain pace late in the race
  • More forgiving than traditional super shoes in stations
  • Purpose-built for hybrid racing

Potential Downsides

  • The ~40mm stack can feel “tall” if you prefer a lower, more connected feel
  • Not as stable as a true training shoe under heavy load
  • Premium price point compared to non-carbon options
  • Currently only available in bright pink colour – not necessarily to everyone’s taste!

Who This Shoe Is Best For

This shoe suits you if:

  • You want a race-day shoe that still performs in the stations
  • You value running efficiency and want help holding pace
  • You’ve struggled with grip or instability in other carbon shoes
  • You’re racing competitively and looking for marginal gains

It’s less ideal if:

  • You prefer a very low, flat, grounded shoe
  • You prioritise maximum stability over speed

Final Verdict

The PUMA Deviate Nitro Elite 4 HYROX hits a very specific sweet spot.

It gives you the speed benefits of a carbon race shoe while still being usable across the full demands of HYROX. That’s been missing in the market.

No shoe is perfect for every station, but this is one of the most well-rounded race options available right now.

For me, it’s the first shoe that feels like it’s actually built for the sport rather than adapted to it.

And that’s why it’s now my race-day choice.  Check it out here, and for more info on the best footwear for HYROX, take a look at this article.
