HYROX returned to New York at the Meadowlands Exposition Centre on October 1st 2022 to kick off the 22/23 Season in America. HYROX is fielding an expanded schedule of 41 races in the season with an estimated 90,000 participants in total, and New York was the first full event of the US calendar.
The event in New York featured the debut of a new division – the GORUCK Individual category – which saw participants complete the course whilst wearing a GORUCK Weighted Training Vest (20lb Male, 14lbs Female) for an added challenge (using the Open division HYROX weights).
HYROX is the first event that bridges the gap between traditional endurance events and functional fitness by combining running with functional movements in a standardised format. Participants in HYROX complete 8 X 1km running laps with a workout between each lap either as Individuals, as Couples or in a Relay Team of 4 with an accessible entry point for any level of fitness. After competing, participants receive a worldwide seeding with the top athletes having a chance to compete at the culmination of the season, the World Championships.
It had initially been intended that the running track for the New York event would be outside (for the first time in HYROX history). However, due to bad weather, it was decided the day before the event that it would be safer to have the track indoors. Due to the relatively small venue, this meant that athletes needed to complete 4 laps of the track for every 1km run.
Prior to the sold out event, HYROX Co-Founder Mortiz Fürste (you can view an interview with him here) commented, “New York is one of our favourite events in the global calendar, it’s an incredible city that has hosted some of the most iconic sporting events ever and we are glad to join that sporting tradition, last year we sold this race out and expect to do so again. New York is also the home of so many of the trend setters and innovators within the health and wellness space so we always know we need to bring our A game and put on a flawless event to live up the standard of such an incredible city.”
