For a recent episode of the Rox Lyfe podcast, we sat down with Gabrielle Nikora-Baker, one of the most exciting athletes currently making waves in HYROX.

After qualifying for the Elite 15 in Stockholm with a standout performance at the Phoenix Major, Gabrielle’s rise has been remarkably quick, especially given that she only entered the sport a short time ago from a bodybuilding and strength-training background…

From Bodybuilding to Elite 15

What makes Gabrielle’s story so compelling is how transferable her strength base has been to HYROX. Her background in heavy lifting, unilateral leg work, and years of disciplined gym training has clearly carried over into race-day performance.

That strength is particularly visible on stations like the sled push and lunges, where she has already been among the quickest in elite fields. Her bodybuilding background also seems to have given her a physical resilience that has helped her absorb a rapid increase in running volume without breaking down.

At the same time, one of the biggest shifts has been moving away from physique-driven goals and towards performance. Rather than eating to look a certain way, Gabrielle now fuels to train and recover at a much higher level.

Building the Running Engine Quickly

A major theme from the conversation was just how much progress she has made in her running in such a short period of time.

Gabrielle spoke about increasing her weekly running volume from around 30km to roughly 70-75km, while layering in threshold work, VO2 sessions, easy mileage, and compromised running sessions specific to HYROX demands.

For an athlete relatively new to structured running, that progression is hugely impressive and gives a good insight into why she has been able to make such rapid gains in the sport.

Fuelling for Performance

Another really useful part of the conversation was around nutrition and recovery.

Coming from a bodybuilding background, Gabrielle talked about how different it feels to now be eating for performance, with daily carbohydrate intake often reaching 500g or more to support the demands of training.

For HYROX athletes, there are some genuinely practical takeaways here around fuelling volume, intra-session carbs, and race-day nutrition strategies.

She also shared some insight into what she uses in races, including carb drinks and maple syrup-based fuel, which is always interesting for athletes trying to refine their own strategy.

Mindset, Setbacks, and Racing at the Top Level

One of the standout parts of the episode was her honesty around mindset.

Gabrielle reflected on how disappointing races, particularly Melbourne, forced her to reassess things before bouncing back with a breakthrough performance in Phoenix.

That ability to process setbacks, stay objective, and continue building is often what separates athletes who progress quickly from those who plateau.

What’s Next for Gabrielle Nikora-Baker?

With Elite 15 qualification already secured for Stockholm, the focus now turns to continuing that upward progression.

Given how quickly she has adapted to the sport and how much room there still appears to be in the running side, Gabrielle looks like an athlete with serious upside over the next 12 months.

This was a brilliant conversation packed with practical training insights, mindset takeaways, and a fascinating look at one of HYROX’s fastest-rising athletes.
