Malaga hosted the final Spanish HYROX event of the 2022/23 season on 15th April 2023 at the FYCMA. In what was reportedly a VERY hot venue (which always tends to make racing a HYROX more difficult), there were still some great performances put down, including 2 new age group world records.  Read on to find out more.

Men’s Pro

The Men’s pro was won by Jonathon Wynn in a time of 00:56:58.  That’s actually the seventh fastest time that we’ve ever seen in HYROX, from this impressive Australian athlete who has fairly consistently been getting faster and faster over the past year or so.

Second was Joffrey Voisin in 00:57:40, followed by Florian Gast in 00:58:15 (which was a personal best and sees him strengthen his position in the qualifying spots for the Elite race at the upcoming 2023 World Championships in Manchester).

You can see an interview I did with Jonathon Wynn here, and he’s also provided his comments on the Malaga race in the below video…

Also worthy of mention in the Men’s Pro division was David Martin Peral whose time of 01:01:20 was 6th fastest overall on the day, and the fastest ever in the 45-49 age group, smashing his own world record by 2 minutes!

Women’s Pro

The Women’s Pro race was won by Camilla Massa in a time of 01:06:14 – followed extremely closely by Felicity Cole in a time of 01:06:29.

It was another impressive performance from the 2 women who would have been hoping to record a time fast enough to leave them in the qualifying spots for the Elite races at the upcoming World Championships.  However, they are just short of this at the moment, with best times less than 25 seconds off of automatic qualification.  Whether either one of them has another attempt before the season is over remains to be seen.  With both ladies having won Women’s Pro races this season, this may again open up a discussion around whether qualification for the Elite races should be based on fastest times in the season, or through some other method (such as winning a Pro race).  To use Camilla Massa as an example, she has now won three Women’s Pro races this season, and been on the podium in two others.  She has clearly raced very well, and I suspect will feel like she deserves to be in the Elite lineups.

Rounding off the podium was Anabel Obank in a personal best time of 01:08:54.

Men’s Open

Fastest in the Men’s Open was Jose Angel Hidalgo Izquierdo in a time of 00:58:00. This broke his own 45-49 age group world record by 3 seconds.

Just 44 seconds behind was Sergio Olivares Plaza in 00:58:44.

Third place was taken by Diego Caballero Nistal in 01:00:11.

Another performance of note came from Simon Passmore, who finished 4th overall and set a World Record in the Men’s Open 50-55 age group, with a time of 01:01:27 – incredibly impressive!!  Simon kindly shared his thoughts on the race, as well as some of his sporting background and upcoming HYROX plans with us in the below video…

Women’s Open

Fastest in the Women’s Open race was Esther Cañete Sanchez in 01:05:52.

Second place was taken by Alba López Calero, followed by Noelia Pérez Tur in 01:09:18.

Doubles

The fastest Mixed Doubles time was set by Clare Mears and Gavin Hogarth in a time of 00:57:15.

The Men’s Doubles was won by David João Preciado and Tiago Marinho in 00:52:56.

The Women’s Doubles was won by Eve Hamilton and Kirsty McMillan in 01:03:44.

Other Spanish HYROX events are held in Barcelona, Madrid, Bilbao and Valencia.
