Where did the name HYROX come from?
In July 2025, we sat down with HYROX Co-Founder Mo Fürste on the Rox Lyfe podcast to discuss the future of the sport.
As well as discussing tickets, the Elite Series and drug testing, Greg asked Mo about one of the most frequently debated topics in the HYROX world: does HYROX really stand for “Hybrid Rockstars”?
Over the years, the theory that HYROX stands for “Hybrid Rockstars” has become a popular explanation. But according to Mo, that’s not the case.
Speaking exclusively to Rox Lyfe, Mo explained:
“I love the fact that people talk about it, but the real answer to the question is very, very boring….
HYROX had another name for the very first inaugural event in November 2017 in Germany. Then basically an IP ownership, brand security, legal issue happened and we had to change the name that we chose at the beginning.
By the way, we are so happy we had to change because we think this name is so much better. But the reality is that hybrid and rockstar had nothing to do with the origin of the word HYROX.
But, yeah, again, I like the content – I think it’s funny watching it and the rumours around it!”
So there you have it: despite the popular theory, HYROX was never intended to mean “Hybrid Rockstars”.
The organisation was forced to abandon its original name shortly before its first event because of an intellectual property and branding issue. What Mo doesn’t reveal, however, is exactly how they then landed on the name HYROX.
So one HYROX mystery has been solved – although another one remains.
But, according to Mo, they couldn’t be happier with the outcome.
