David Wetherill’s story is one of grit, perspective, and redefining what’s possible. Born with a rare bone development disorder and a heart condition, he’s spent his life proving that limitations don’t define you – your mindset does. A three-time Paralympian in table tennis, world record holder for the fastest marathon on crutches, and now a HYROX athlete, David’s journey is packed with lessons on resilience and purpose.

From Paralympic Table Tennis to HYROX

David grew up in a sporting household, both parents P.E. teachers, and found his outlet early in table tennis – the one sport he could compete in against able-bodied athletes. It led him to three Paralympic Games and a world ranking of number two. But after a serious hip injury ended his table tennis career, he faced an identity crisis that forced him to rebuild.

“It wasn’t the pain or the hospital visits that broke me – it was losing my purpose.”

Rehab led to running, then to HYROX – with the blend of endurance and functional strength that reigniting his competitive drive. Within a year, he’d completed ten races and qualified for the World Championships.

Pain and Perspective

Pain has been a lifelong companion for David, but he sees it differently than most. His condition means constant discomfort – but also constant perspective.

“Pain management is everything for me – I’m constantly in pain, but fitness gives that pain a purpose.”

Drawing heavily on Stoic philosophy, David reframes suffering as an opportunity for growth. He quotes Marcus Aurelius often and lives by principles like Amor Fati – to love your fate, no matter what it brings.

“It’s not the thing that hurts you – it’s your judgment of the thing that hurts you.”

The Marathon World Record on Crutches

In 2023, David completed the London Marathon on crutches in 5:59 – breaking the world record. But for him, the record was secondary.

“The goal was to break six hours, but the purpose was to raise awareness for Type 1 diabetes – for my friends and their kids. That’s what kept me going when it got really tough.”

The feat became another reminder that with a strong enough why, anything is possible.

Stoicism, Ironman Ambitions, and the Bigger Picture

After “failing” to finish an Ironman earlier this year due to health complications, David is training for another attempt in Kalmar, Sweden. He calls it his obsession – but also his teacher.

“You can’t train resilience by reading about it. You’ve got to be in tough situations.”

For David, HYROX has become a metaphor for life: showing up, pushing through, and finding meaning in movement.
